The Orangerie is located in a natural setting along on a limestone bottom creek about 5 miles north of the Dallas Central business district. The flood plain and building codes have determined it’s 700 square foot size and its charmingly odd foot print. The building has a bathroom, kitchen and conservatory. The original house was built in 1917 and is designed by one of the best Dallas architects. The inspiration for the window configuration was inspired by the house’s solarium.
The original wood windows were still in place and they had very narrow site lines with 7/8″ muntins. The client was in the process of painting the windows when we started to look at the project and they required redecoration every 12 months, especially on the western exposure. Low maintenance was therefore definitely important.
The Crittall Berkeley was the closest window we could find with good sight lines for view. The purpose of the for the wintering of Orange and Lemon Trees and entertaining for fortunate guests.
